The African Paralympic Committee (APC) as a regional organization and Member of the international Paralympic Committee (IPC) is the governing body of the Paralympic Movement on the continent of Africa and para sports / sports for Persons with impairment in Africa. The name African Paralympic Committee was revised and adapted as the official name of the governing body of the Paralympic Movement 0n 2nd December 2001 in Cairo, Egypt.

The APC replaced the African Sports Confederation of Disabled (ASCOD) the original organization in charge of the Paralympic Movement and sports for persons with disabilities in Africa. The ASCOD was founded in 1987 in Algeria. Its main aim was to coordinate nd promote the sports for persons with disabilities in Africa. Its headquarters was based in Cairo, Egypt until the year 2010. Dr. Nabil Salem of Egypt became the first President of the APC formerly ASCOD from 1987 to 2010. After 23 years in office thus from 1987 to 2010, Dr. Nabil Salem was succeeded by Leonel da Rocha Pinto of Angola in 2010 and subsequently the APC headquarters was moved to Luanda, Angola. The Executive Committee Members elected at the 2010 General Assembly in Cairo, Egypt.

On 14 April 2017, Mr. Leonel da Rocha Pinto was re-elected again as President of the African Paralympic Committee (APC), during the General Assembly in Luanda, Angola, together with elected Executive Board members notably; Hamid El Aouni (Morocco) and Leon Fleiser (South Africa) as Vice Presidents. Jose Rodrigo Bejarano (Cape Verde) as Secretary General, and Antonio da Luz (Angola) as treasurer. Representatives for the four language communities were also elected: Mpindi Bumali (Uganda) represented the English speaking National Paralympic Committees (NPCs); Leopold Gbnenou (Benin) for the French; Hachfa Mouhamed (Algeria) for the Arabic; and Elton Djon Costa Gonçalves (Cape Verde) for the Portuguese speaking NPCs. A total of 32 African NPCs were represented at the General Assembly. Mr. Leonel Pinto remained in office until 31st October, 2021.

On 31st October, 2021 in Rabat, Morocco Mr. Samson Deen of Ghana was elected the new APC President and took over from Mr. Leonel da Rocha Pinto who had served the organization since 2010. The current Executive Board led by Mr. Samson Deen, Ghana as President; Dr. Hayat M. A. Khattab, Egypt – 1st Vice President; José Rodrigo Bejarano, Cape Verde – 2nd Vice President; Celestin Nzeyimana, Rwanda – Secretary General; Khaled Raebi Libya – Treasurer; Jean-Marie Malepa, Mauritius Member ( Representing French Speaking NPCs); Mr. Brahim Amin, Egypt-Member (Representing Arabic Speaking NPCs); Limpho Rakoto, Lesotho – Memebr (Representing English Speaking NPCs); Jailma Da Cunha Oliviera, Cape Verde – Member (Representing Portuguese Speaking NPCs); Dr. Debra Alexander South Africa – Memebr (IPC Governing Board Member) and Najwa Awane, Morocco – Member (Athletes’ Representative) The APC is currently composed of 48 National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) across Africa recognized by the IPC. Its main aim is to coordinate and promote the sports for persons with disabilities in Africa.
